10 Person Video Calls With Skype?
Sep 4th
Skype this week released the Skype 5.0 beta 2 for Windows (Sorry Mac/Linux peeps). One of the biggest features is that you can now make group video calls with up to 10 people! WOW! Unfortunately during the beta, everyone in the video call has to be using the beta 2.
The user interface has been refreshed with the avatars looking sleeker and crisper; I like it a lot, except for the profile features. At the top left, you can only see your status button and username; no longer is your avatar showing or your status message, which I generally like to view what I’ve written & change it quickly from time to time.
The quality of the calls is improved, and if you drop a call due to network issues, it now has automatic call recovery, which will automatically reconnect the call.
Overall, it looks really good, and I am keeping in mind that it’s a beta, so more features/fixes are coming. If you’re adventurous like I am, try it out now. Skype is not taking Google Voice in Gmail lying down. I sincerely hope Skype enables these features for Mac soon; 98% of my Skype friends are on a Mac.

Do You Buy Too Many Phones?
Sep 4th
A friend related to me last night how proud he was of me this year for sticking with 1 new phone. This had me thinking about how many cell phones I had in 2009, and why he stated what he did; let’s review.
February/May 2009
T-Mobile G1: The first Android phone, I bought this around Jan/Feb. At the time, Android simply wasn’t ready, and I just didn’t care for the form factor, and believe it or not, I missed Windows Mobile…
May/June 2009
Sprint Windows Treo Pro: I had Treos previous to jumping to the G1, so when this came out, I was so excited because it promised to be different, and it was shiny! Yeah, that didn’t last long…
June/October 2009
Sprint Palm Pre: I felt foolish after I bought the Treo Pro and realized that I really wanted the Palm Pre. The worst part? When I figured that out, I was 5 days past my 30 day return policy. Ouch! However, I LOVED the Palm Pre. To me, it’s still the most elegant OS out there (but had a horrible form factor build); it just didn’t have developer support, due to the rise of the Androids…
October 2009/February 2010
Verizon’s DROID: When this phone hit the market, it slapped every other phone in the face and made them call it “Daddy.” This beast had a super fast processor, new OS, Google Voice Navigation, docks, and it was AWESOME. It was truly a “man’s phone.” However, as I noted in this article about Android, they have a tendency to release an awesome phone literally weeks after you buy your “new” one, and it was one that I HAD to have…
February 2010/Current
T-Mobile’s Nexus One (Unlocked): What can I say: I love Google, and I LOVE their vanilla phone with no other carrier garbage software on it. The first phone to have a 1Ghz processor, this phone continues to be the model for how other Android phones are made, and it still gets all of the Android updates FIRST. It’s the best phone I’ve owned overall, and to date, it’s been my only phone, a far cry from last year.
What’s Next?
My goal is to keep the Nexus One until the beastly 2Ghz phones are released. I assume Google will release a model (Nexus Two) that will showcase that monster. Otherwise, I’m fully content with this phone, which took a lot of trial/error (and expense) in 2009.

A Teen That Deserves a “High-Five”: MrElliotB
Sep 4th
There’s a new series on YouTube, and it stars a young talent that has reinvented himself and his channel, 13 year old MrElliotB.
Elliot’s YouTube channel has typically consisted of long boarding videos & skits, but he came out of nowhere this week with a new current events news series called “High-Five.” Elliot takes 5 of his favorite stories of the week from sites aggregated in Google Reader and discusses each in under 3 minutes. It’s informative & comical, and what makes it truly unique is the transition between stories being a “high-five” he gives to the camera (hence the name).
Despite being young, Elliot wanted people to know that he IS intelligent. In a recent conversation he mentioned a couple of psychology books that he was reading;–yes, you read that correctly: PSYCHOLOGY BOOKS–one he just finished called “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell, and another he’s currently reading called “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell. He gets a “High-Five” for that!
Elliot believes that we should stop artificially limiting kids/teens on what WE think they should be doing based on their age. We tend to expect so little from our youth, when in fact, they are doing things well beyond their years, and it should be promoted and celebrated.
I hope that Elliot inspires more young people to improve themselves with their talents, which in turn, improves the world. High-Five!
